Correction

A sentence in the "Diversity Digest" column written by Professor Paulette Clancy on Page 4 of the April 24 edition contained an editorial typo that altered the significance of the data being discussed. Here is the corrected paragraph, culminating in the sentence that had contained the error:

"In order to retain women faculty in science and engineering, there are several key issues that we, as a university, need to address. One of the most crucial and complex involves finding creative ways to retain 'dual career' couples. Six women faculty in science and engineering have left Cornell in the past six years largely because of such issues; this represents 20 percent of the number of women faculty in engineering today (but nearly 50 percent of the number in 1996!). More disturbingly, one science department at Cornell reports that, over the past eight years, 40 percent of the male faculty for whom dual-career issues were a major concern at the hiring stage were resolved with the woman partner accepting under-employment. In contrast, none of the women faculty in the same situation had partners accepting underemployment."
