Former president of Zambia visits campus

Kenneth Kaunda, right, first president of the Republic of Zambia (1964-1991) and founder of the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Foundation, meets with student Ola Owe during a reception in the A.D. White House, May 5, following his lecture in Rockefeller Hall. During his talk, "Democratization, Development and the Challenges for Africa," Kaunda said that fighting poverty is a prerequisite for defeating the AIDS epidemic in Africa. He also argued that African nations must be allowed to manage their own development strategies, and he pointed out that many challenges facing Africa are universal ones.
