Filmmaker Su Friedrich screens her personal perspective on illness, aging

Cornell Cinema welcomes back to Ithaca acclaimed experimental filmmaker Su Friedrich to present her latest work, "The Odds of Recovery," tonight, Sept. 18, at 7:15 p.m. in the Willard Straight Hall Theatre.

In "Odds," Friedrich weaves documentary with first-person experimental filmmaking to tell the story of her battle with a multitude of illnesses, the series of operations she endured and her struggle to understand the web of Western medicine. Both poignant and funny, this intimate portrait takes a look at the realities of aging, personal stagnation and growth. It allows the viewer to peek into the filmmaker's fight to understand her body as well as the private world of a long-term relationship.

Friedrich's visit is a "Love Your Body Week" event and is co-sponsored with the Cornell Women's Resource Center.

Tickets are $6 for the general public; $5 for students and seniors; and $4 for Cornell graduate students. For more information about this or other fall screenings, call 255-3522 or visit http://cinema.cornell.edu.

Friday night, Sept. 19, Cornell Cinema presents the Ithaca premiere of "Friday Night" at 7:15 p.m. in the Willard Straight Hall Theatre, with an introduction by film scholar Judith Mayne. Directed by Claire Denis ("Nénette et Boni," "Beau Travail"), "Friday Night" is an investigation into the body erotic and a beautifully filmed paean to the hitchhiker fantasy. Laure is en route to her lover's flat, with her possessions packed in her car, when she meets Jean, a handsome stranger. "This magical realist, near-silent translation of Parisian love is at once devastating and ravishingly full of joy," said Slant Magazine. An additional screening will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m., also in Willard Straight.
