Dog wash: Cornell's Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association plans a fund-raising dog wash, Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Tower Road plaza (in front of James Law Auditorium), at the College of Veterinary Medicine. The rain date is Sept. 28.

Plantations pepper fest: This Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m., Cornell Plantations is offering a guided tour of the Pounder Heritage Vegetable Garden, in which special displays and plantings demonstrate the history, genetic diversity and importance of peppers. More than 50 varieties of peppers -- ranging from sweet to fiery and from smaller than a pea to bigger than a grapefruit -- are on display. There will be tips on growing peppers and recipes for eating them, too. The fee for the tour is $10 ($5 for Plantations members), and reservations can be made by calling 254-7430. Fellowships and grants: The Institute for European Studies is accepting applications for travel grants for Cornell faculty who teach European languages. The deadline to apply is Sept. 30. Visit the Web site at http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/europe/funding/facult y.asp for details.

    Shoemobile: The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) has announced that Lehigh Safety Shoe will be on campus with its shoemobile this Friday, Sept. 26. The shoemobile, which provides a large selection of safety shoes, will be at the Environmental Health and Safety Building, 201 Palm Road (east of Cornell Orchards off Route 366), from 7:30 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 3 p.m. Employees eligible to receive department reimbursement for safety shoes should use their procurement card. Questions can be referred to EH&S at 255-8200 or by contacting the EH&S personnel on duty at the shoemobile.

    Campus Club: The Cornell Campus Club is having a Newcomers Coffee on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at the Lab of Ornithology on Sapsucker Woods Road. All women newcomers and members of the Campus Club are welcome.

    DAAD fellowships: Applications are now invited for the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) fellowships for the academic year 2004-05. DAAD fellowships carry tuition and fees, monthly stipends ranging from 715 euro to 975 euro for 10 months and a 520 euro to 1,022 euro allowance for travel. The fellowships enable students to study at a German university or to work on a research project in Germany. Applications should include an updated CV, a project outline and/or rationale for study in Germany, Cornell transcript, two letters of recommendation from professors in the student's field, local address, telephone number and e-mail address. The competition is open to graduating seniors, graduate students and recent Ph.D.s and postdoctoral researchers from all schools and colleges of the university except medicine, veterinary medicine and pharmacy.
