Electronic info communications in Africa is focus of symposium

Promoting information communications technology (ICT) at African universities as an integral part of sustainable development is the focus of a two-day symposium organized by Cornell's Institute for African Development (IAD) and the Department of Communication, Nov. 19 and 20.

Roy Steiner, Cornell alumnus and managing director of Cyberplex Africa, will deliver the keynote address, "Information Technologies and African Development: Challenges and Opportunities," Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Room B08 of Sage Hall. All symposium talks and sessions are free and open to the public.

According to symposium organizers, ICT is an electronic communications system that "allows faster delivery of technical assistance ranging from long-distance education and tele-medicine to environmental management."

More than a dozen experts in higher education and in the field of ICT will focus on African universities and their potential for using ICT to support enduring improvements in the health, education and economic welfare of their people. For a complete list of speakers and sessions, visit http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/conf/2004/ict.

The symposium is a response to recommendations from two international meetings sponsored by United Nations organizations in 2003. Participants at both meetings cited the need to promote the involvement of universities in communication development.

Cornell co-sponsors for the symposium include: Albert Mann Library, Johnson Graduate School of Management, Africana Studies and Research Center, Cornell Institute for Public Affairs and the Office of International Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
