Dress up in your holiday best for an elegant holiday party and benefit for Cornell Cinema on Dec. 9. Festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres, desserts, a cash bar, live music by A.J. Strauss and a silent auction of vintage movie lobby cards.
The party continues with a 9 p.m. screening of an archival print of "I Kiss Your Hand, Madame" (1928), a sparkling romantic comedy à la Ernst Lubitsch about a wealthy divorcée and a waiter (who is a former Russian nobleman).
The film features lavish sets and a fluent visual style that perfectly complement Marlene Dietrich's sensual performance, and it is a wonderful example from Dietrich's body of work in German silent film, made before she created an international sensation with her performance in Joseph von Sternberg's "The Blue Angel" in 1930. The film will be accompanied by silent film pianist extraordinaire Philip Carli.
Proceeds from the benefit will go toward purchasing new projection equipment for Willard Straight Theatre. Tickets are $35, $15 for students, and are available in advance at 104 Willard Straight Hall or by calling 255-3522.
