Fine arts seniors' work is on display

This untitled oil painting on a photograph by fine arts senior Alicia Penn is one of 21 works on display in the Fine Arts Library in Sibley Dome through Jan. 24.

The senior painting and printmaking students in Cornell's College of Architecture, Art and Planning are exhibiting new work in the Fine Arts Library in Sibley Dome through Jan. 24, 2005.

On exhibit are 21 works in such media as oil, acrylic, enamel, egg tempera and aquatint as well as digital prints and mixed media assemblages created specifically for the exhibition and the library space.

The student work is hung throughout the library, and a map is posted showing where each piece is located, in addition to titles of works, artists, dimensions and materials. The show is part of the pre-thesis curriculum for fine arts students as part of the preparation for their thesis shows, which will go up in Tjaden Hall's Gallery and Experimental Studio during the spring 2005 semester.

"We have all worked hard to create work specific to the library location that is also relevant to contemporary issues," said Alicia Penn, a senior fine arts student whose work is included in the exhibition. "In presenting work to the public, we hope to encourage a dialogue with art within the greater community."

Advising the painting students are Stan Taft, associate dean and professor of fine arts, and Carl Ostendarp, visiting assistant professor of fine arts; advising the printmaking students is Elisabeth Meyer, associate professor of fine arts.

Gallery and Fine Arts Library hours when school is in session are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-11 p.m.
