Community service award: The Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Award, established by alumni Gerald '54 and Margot Robinson '55 and Robert '53 and Helen Appel '55, is designed to honor Cornell students' past and present community service and to provide support for their projects, which address a community's social needs. Applications are being sought for three separate awards of $1,500 each for use in community service projects the awardees have initiated or supported. All Cornell students involved in community service are eligible. Applications are available at http://www.psc.cornell.edu or at the Public Service Center office, 200 Barnes Hall, or the Office of the Cornell Tradition, 107 Day Hall. Applications are due by Friday, March 19, and must include a letter of recommendation. Applicants also must be available for interviews on April 16. Freeman peace prize: Applications are being sought for the 19th annual Harrop and Ruth Freeman Prize in Peace Studies. The prize is given to encourage Cornell undergraduate students to pursue work or study in fields related to peace studies and conflict resolution. The value of the prize in 2004 is $2,500. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply by submitting:an application form and a brief (200-500 word) statement of purpose, a letter of recommendation from the student's adviser or a faculty member who knows his or her work well and a Cornell transcript. Preference will be given to students who plan to work in peace-related organizations, but students who are going on to graduate work in the field also are eligible for consideration. The application deadline is March 15. Shoemobile: The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) has announced that Lehigh Safety Shoe will be on campus with its shoemobile this Friday, Feb. 13. The shoemobile, which provides a large selection of safety shoes, will be at the Environmental Health and Safety Building, 201 Palm Road (east of Cornell Orchards off Route 366), from 7:30 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 3 p.m. Employees eligible to receive department reimbursement for safety shoes should use their procurement card. Questions can be referred to EH&S at 255-8200 or by contacting the EH&S personnel at the shoemobile.
