Violin/piano duo comes to Barnes

Last March, Canadian pianist Brigitte Poulin came to campus with her program "Homage to the Prepared Piano," featuring John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes. She returns to Ithaca, this time with violinist Silvia Mandolini, to present works for solo piano, solo violin and violin/piano duo in Barnes Hall on Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. The program features the music of living composers Jean Lesage (Canada), Luca Francesconi (Italy) and Gerardo Gandini (Argentina), as well as Iannis Xenakis (Greece-France) and Luciano Berio (Italy).

Mandolini and Poulin has played together since 1994, even though the violinist lives in Milan and the pianist in Montreal. With their common interest in contemporary music, they meet about once a year to produce programs of new works.

An accomplished soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist, Poulin has a repertoire that covers all periods, from the invention to the deconstruction of the piano. She has performed for numerous contemporary music festivals in Europe, Canada and the United States.

Mandolini studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and at McGill University; she also graduated from the Verdi Conservatory in Milan.
