The Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers has named For Love of Insects by Thomas Eisner, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Chemical Ecology (a discipline he helped found), the best book in the field of the biological sciences. The book covers Eisner's 45-year entomological odyssey of discovery. The group gave honorable mention in the anthropology and sociology category to Remaking the American Mainstream, co-authored by Victor Nee, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Sociology and director of the Center for the Study of Economy and Society at Cornell. Nee's book is the first systematic look at U.S. assimilation since the 1960s. Harvard University Press published both books last year.

Malcolm Bourne, professor emeritus of food science at the Geneva Agricultural Experiment Station, was elected president of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology at the 12th World Food Congress, held in Chicago in July 2003. The academy identifies and recognizes individuals distinguished by their scientific and professional contributions to food science and technology worldwide. He will serve in this capacity until the next World Food Congress, to be held in Nantes, France in September 2006.
