Kathleen M. Rasmussen, professor of nutritional sciences, has been elected the next president of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. She will become president June 1 for one year, after having served as president-elect for the past year. Then she will serve for a year as past president. She succeeds Cornell's Dale Bauman, professor of nutritional sciences and animal sciences. Rasmussen, the past president of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation, is an expert on maternal and child nutrition; her research focuses on maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation. The American Society for Nutritional Sciences is considered the premier organization of nutrition researchers in the country. It has two divisions, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and the Society for International Nutrition Research, of which Cornell nutritionists Jean-Pierre Habicht is the current president and Rebecca Stoltzfus is the president-elect.
Renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and educator Dr. O. Wayne Isom, chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been named the recipient of the 24th annual Maurice R. Greenberg Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on a member of its professional staff. The award, which recognizes Isom's many years of outstanding service to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell, consists of a $50,000 grant made possible through an endowment from Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman of the American International Group. The award presentation was made at a gala dinner April 29 at the Plaza Hotel.
