National honor society's CU chapter to induct top government students

Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society for political science and government majors, will be holding its second annual induction ceremony at Cornell this Friday. Forty-five new members will be inducted.

The ceremony will take place on Friday, May 28, at 2 p.m. in the Anabel Taylor Hall Auditorium. A reception will follow in the Founder's Room.

Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics and "to stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science." Today, there are over 460 active chapters across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the territory of Guam. Cornell's year-old chapter has about 30 members.

As the home of one of New York's newest chapters, Cornell joins other such institutions as Yale University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania as a host to this distinguished organization. Nomination for membership in the organization is extremely competitive. A majority of this year's inductees boasted grade-point averages of 3.75 or above, with almost 20 percent writing senior theses.

Peter Cohl '05, co-founder of Cornell's Pi Sigma Alpha Chapter, said, "I hope that membership in Pi Sigma Alpha strengthens the commitment of our students to continue their studies and interest in political science throughout their lives and careers."

Honored guests at this year's ceremony will include M. Elizabeth Sanders, professor of government, who will be presenting the honors certificates and cords; keynote speaker Jeremy Rabkin, associate professor of government; and Issac Kramnick, vice provost for undergraduate education and the Richard J. Schwartz Professor of Government. Sanders has been a member of Pi Sigma Alpha since her undergraduate days, and Rabkin and Kramnick will be inducted during Friday's ceremony as faculty members.
