Obituary

Scharlie E. Bartter Handlan, 77, of Pinehurst, N.C., died April 8, after a long illness. She was the associate director of Alumni Affairs at Cornell until her retirement in 1988.

The daughter of Charles and Mabel Taggart Watson of Seneca Falls, N.Y., she was a graduate of Cornell in the Class of 1947. She taught fifth grade at Cayuga Heights Elementary School in Ithaca from 1958 until 1969, when she left to work at her alma mater.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Handlan; sons and daughters-in-law Brit and Marilyn Bartter of Winnetka, Ill., and Randall and Antonieta Bartter of Fullerton, Calif.; stepson and daughter-in-law Mark and Mary Jane Handlan of Snellville, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service in her honor Saturday, May 15, at 2 p.m. in Sage Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scharlie B. Handlan Cornell Tradition Fund, addressed to Inge Reichenbach, Vice President, Alumni Affairs and Development, 303 Day Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. 14853-2801.
