Soundbites

Here is a sampling of quotations from Cornell University faculty, students and staff that have appeared recently in the national and international news media:

"They want unique experiences at hotels and are ready to welcome features that will surprise them."
-- John Corgel, professor, School of Hotel Administration, in the July 22 edition of The New York Times. Corgel said surveys suggest that travelers are bored with drab look-alike [hotel] chains, cubbyhole-size urban hotel rooms and grimy bed-and-breakfasts, wrote The Times.

"More than there has been in the past, there is an understanding that all Americans support the troops."
-- Glenn Altschuler, dean of continuing education and professor of American studies, discussing the symbolism of yellow ribbons supporting servicemen and women, in the Detroit Free Press, July 19.

"What is happening under this administration is a cultural change. We have to address this cultural change and fix it."
-- Kurt Gottfried, professor emeritus of physics and chairman of a group within the Union of Concerned Scientists that has released a report saying the Bush administration is considering the political positions of scientists in selecting members of scientific advisory groups. The report said candidates were asked, among other things, whether they had voted for President Bush. In a press conference reported by Reuters and The New York Times, July 9, Gottfried said the administration's actions could cause researchers to leave the government, harming the scientific enterprise.

"What they are trying to do is set an example. I think it is a bit of a questionable match in industries, but it makes a perfect fit in terms of philosophy, the style of organizing and the targeted industries."
-- Richard Hurd, professor and director of labor studies, School of Industrial and Labor Relations, in a Chicago Tribune story July 7 on the then proposed merger between UNITE (Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Workers), the top textile workers union, and HERE (Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees), the top hospitality industry union in the country. Members voted two days later to merge.
