Moody-Adams is new chair of A.D. White program

Moody-Adams

Michele Moody-Adams has been appointed the new chair of the Andrew Dickson White Professors-at-Large Program at Cornell.

She succeeds Porus Olpadwala, planning professor and former dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning, who had served as program chair since 1996.

Moody-Adams, the Hutchinson Professor of Ethics and Public Life, professor of philosophy and director of Cornell's Ethics and Public Life program, has served for several years on the A. D. White selection committee and was a "perfect choice," for chair, said Alison Power, dean of the Cornell Graduate School, under whose auspices the program is run.

"She understands the processes and purpose of the program, is a world class scholar in her own right and is a highly respected member of the faculty," said Power of Moody-Adams.

The professors-at-large program chair generally serves a three-year renewable term.

Established in 1965, the program brings distinguished scholars to the Cornell campus for formal and informal exchanges with faculty and students. Up to 20 professors-at-large are named at Cornell at any one time. They make periodic visits to campus over six-year terms and are considered full members of the Cornell faculty. In addition to giving public lectures, professors-at-large participate in office hours, seminars and thesis consultations with undergraduate and graduate students.

"The A.D. White professors contribute greatly to the intellectual vitality of the university," said Moody-Adams. "It is an honor and a pleasure to play a central role in bringing them to campus."
