Lecture hall has a new name

The former Lecture Hall D in Goldwin Smith Hall has been renamed and dedicated as the Philip E. Lewis Lecture Hall, in honor of former Arts and Sciences Dean Philip Lewis, through the generosity of Robert Katz '69 and his wife, Jane Katz. From left: Current Arts and Sciences Dean Peter Lepage, Lewis' wife Catherine Porter, Jane Katz, Bob Katz, Lewis and Cornell President Jeffrey Lehman at the dedication last October. The Katzes' gift cited Lewis' many contributions to the College of Arts and Sciences. Lewis has served on the Cornell faculty since 1968 and chaired the Department of Romance Studies for the better part of two decades. Before becoming acting dean in 1995, he served as an associate dean under two consecutive college leaders. In 1996 he was nominated as the Harold Tanner Dean of the college, a position he held until June 2003. Jon Reis Photo + Design
