Cornell's Institute for African Development (IAD) is introducing a cash grant for K-12 teachers in upstate New York. The Teacher Grant for Developing a Curriculum Unit on Africa is open to teachers from all subject areas. Grant recipients may develop a curriculum unit focusing on African history, current issues, culture, or science-related facets and developments. Completed units will be posted on IAD's Web site and distributed in CD format to interested teachers.
Educators from schools in upstate New York are eligible to apply for the grant. In the 2005 grant cycle, Cornell will offer two $1,000 grants. Unlike many grants that limit uses of money to materials, the IAD grant compensates teachers for their time as well as for materials required for research and writing the unit. Teachers can conduct their projects during spring or summer, but projects must be completed and curriculum units received by IAD staff no later than Aug. 15, 2005.
Teachers interested in applying can contact Jackie Cervantes at the IAD at jc455@cornell.edu or call 255-5499. An application can be accessed at http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/africa/outreach/educator.asp (click on Teacher Grants). Proposals are due April 1.
