Emeritus professors meet: The Association of Cornell University Emeritus Professors will hold its fall meeting Oct. 30 at 2:15 p.m. in G-10 of the Biotechnology Building. In addition to the social hour and business meeting, Cornell Plantations Director Donald Rakow will speak on "Cornell Plantations: Past Roots -- Future Branches." Spouses and friends of emeritus faculty are welcome, as are spouses of deceased emeritus faculty.
Plantations cited: Cornell Plantations has been named as one of "America's Best Public Gardens" by Garden Design magazine. Listed on the strength of its herb collection, Plantations was among 34 public gardens selected from the several thousand in the United States by a panel of horticulturists, landscape architects and garden designers. The magazine said of Plantations' Robison York State Herb Garden: "Oddly enough, people love Cornell's herb garden because it doesn't look too well tended. They have raised beds with a carefully loose appearance, not all of those terribly manicured, prim and proper clumps." The only other gardens cited for excellence in herb collections were the United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., and the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Ohio.
