Notables
Ross Brann, professor and chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies, is one
of three scholars to receive the Jack K. Walsh Award for 1995-96 from
La corónica, A Journal of Medieval Spanish Language
and Literature. The journal is based in the
Department of Modern Languages at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
The award annually recognizes an outstanding article that the journal recently has
published. Brann and professors Angel
Sáenz-Badillos Pérez and Judit Targarona of
Universidad Complutense de Madrid, are co-authors
of "Semu'el ibn Sason y su poesía hebrea en
la Castilla del siglo XIV," which appeared in volume 24 (1996) of
La corónica.
The Naked Mole-Rat Mystery: Scientific Sleuths at
Work (Lerner Publications, 1996) has received a Young Readers Book
Award from Scientific American magazine. Of
the book by Paul Sherman, professor of neurobiology and behavior, and Gail Jarrow,
an Ithaca-based author, the magazine said: "Novices of all ages will appreciate the
fact that the experimenters who ask such questions about mole-rats use methods that
young readers can understand."
