Trustees meet in NYC: The Cornell Board of Trustees will hold its first meeting of 1997 at the Cornell University Medical College in New York City today through Saturday. The full board will meet in open session on Saturday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Education Center in the Medical College's Harkness Medical Research Building, 1300 York Ave. Topics of discussion will include tuition recommendations for the statutory colleges and the annual report on research. In addition to the full board meeting, the following committees with open sessions will meet today:

Statutory health insurance: As of Jan. 1, 1997, Cayuga Medical Center does not have a contract with Blue Cross of Central New York. Blue Cross is the insurance carrier for the hospital portion of the Empire Plan Health Insurance. Claims will be reimbursed at 100 percent of the covered hospital expenses incurred, less any co-payment or penalty; however, the process in which hospital claims will be paid has changed. Cayuga Medical Center will submit bills for payment directly to Blue Cross, but the payment will be sent directly to the insured. It will be the insured's responsibility to make the payment to the hospital. If you have any questions, contact Empire Blue Cross at 1-800-342-9815 or the Cornell Statutory Benefits Office at 255-4455.

Prize nominees sought: Nominations are being sought for the 1997 Flora Rose Prize. The cash prize is awarded to a Cornell junior or senior who, in the words of the donor, "shall demonstrate the greatest promise for contributing to the growth and self-fulfillment of future generations." Letters of nomination may come from any member of the Cornell community and should be sent to Christopher Bolgiano, Office of Student Services, N-101 MVR Hall, by Monday, Feb. 10. All additional materials must be submitted by the nominee by Feb. 21.

English classes: Registration for free English classes sponsored by the Cornell Campus Club will take place on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the One World Room, Anabel Taylor Hall. There is a $10 registration fee. Classes begin Monday, Feb. 3. For more information, call Ann Marie Dullea at 277-2488 or Pat Clark at 257-0407.

English-language skills: A non-credit course will be offered at Cornell for visiting academicians who seek improvement in any basic English-language skills, particularly speaking and listening comprehension. All language-learning activities will be oriented toward what will be most useful to the scholars during their stay here. Practice in speaking and pronunciation will include formal presentations and individual help with pronunciation problems. Field trips are regularly scheduled to provide opportunities for discussion with native English speakers. This 10-week course, which meets twice a week on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 4:30-6:30 p.m. will begin on Monday, Feb. 17, and end on Wednesday, April 28. The program fee is $450. Registrations must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12. For registration information contact Donna Colunio, School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, B20 Day Hall; telephone: 255-7259; fax: 255-8942; e-mail: sp@sce.cornell.edu.

Lessons are offered in hunt seat and dressage in heated indoor and scenic outdoor arenas. For information call 272-0150 or come by the center.

Chimesmasters competition: The Cornell Chimesmasters have announced that the annual 10-week competition for new chimesmasters will start on Tuesday, Jan. 28, with an information session at 5 p.m. in McGraw Tower. The session will be repeated at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Anyone in the Cornell community who is interested and who can read music can attend one session, which will last about an hour. Those selected as new chimesmasters will continue Cornell's oldest music tradition, which dates back to the university's opening in 1868. The number of chimesmasters at any time totals about nine, and they play three concerts every day during the fall and spring semesters. For information, contact the Chimes Office at 255-5350, send e-mail to chimes@ cornell.edu or visit the Web site at http://www.cornell.edu/zChimes.
