R. Laurence Moore, professor of American history, has received a Fulbright grant to lecture in American history in India for the spring 1997 semester. The award was announced recently by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the United States Information Agency. Moore will teach at several Indian institutions, including Panjab University in Chandigarh. This is his second Fulbright. Moore is one of about 1,600 U.S. Fulbright recipients who will travel abroad during the 1996-97 academic year. The program was established under congressional legislation introduced by former Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas "to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." This year marks the program's 50th anniversary.

William W. Austin, the Given Foundation Professor of Musicology Emeritus, has been elected an honorary member of the American Musicological Society. The honor is the highest the society can bestow on an individual. Austin joined the Cornell faculty in 1947 as university organist and later was named professor of musicology. He was named the Given Foundation Professor in 1969 and retired in 1990. He is widely known for his influential monographs, especially Music in the Twentieth Century: From Debussy through Stravinsky (1966) and Susanna, Jeanie and the Old Folks at Home: Songs of Stephen C. Foster (1975).

William Gilligan, manager of budget systems in the financial planning and budget management office, recently received the Ithaca Board of Fire Commissioners Annual Award for Exceptionally Meritorious Service. Gilligan, an Ithaca Fire Department volunteer since 1989 and captain of Company 6 on West Hill, was awarded for his service to the community and his assistance to the department's volunteer program, including offering his services and computer to help compile and tabulate information for the volunteer incentive program. He also was cited for excelling in volunteer response, training attendance and leadership in his volunteer company.

Gordon F. Streib, professor emeritus in sociology, received the Distinguished Career Contribution to Gerontology Award at the 49th annual scientific meeting of the Gerontology Society of America, held in Washington D.C. in November.
