Cornell Cinema's lineup will feature drama and 'Hype!'

Cornell Cinema is presenting a full package of films for a frosty February.

Bogey and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn and Cassavetes and Rowlands. While not as celebrated as the first two screen couples, John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, who were husband and wife, did offer up some gripping and dramatic celluloid with Cassavetes in the director's chair and Rowlands in the spotlight.

Cornell Cinema will celebrate this Hollywood couple with a presentation of five flicks: Faces, tonight at 7:30 p.m.; Minnie and Moskowitz, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.; A Woman Under the Influence, which garnered Rowlands an Oscar nomination, Feb. 13, at 7:25 p.m.; Opening Night, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.; and Gloria, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. All films will be screened in the Willard Straight Theatre. Unless otherwise noted, all tickets are $4.50; $4 for students, seniors and children under 12.

The movies of Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, referred to as a "militant surrealist," get an airing this coming month. Most notable among the four titles is Alice, Svankmajer's dark and disturbing retelling of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The film combines animation and live action where discarded household objects and other debris come to life with humorous and hideous results. Alice will be shown Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Theatre Arts. Tickets are $2.

Described by director Sharon Pollack as the lesbian version of The Big Chill, Everything Relative depicts a reunion of seven college friends who come together to celebrate the circumcision of a couple's newborn son. Everything Relative will be shown this Friday at 7 p.m. in Willard Straight Theatre.

The documentary of Seattle's loud and grungy music scene, Hype!, won raves from The New York Times critic Janet Maslin, who wrote, "It's not necessary to share this documentary's taste for head-banging music, which it indulges with an exuberant array of concert clips, to appreciate its bemused, articulate interviewees and its larger wit." Hype!, the product of two UCLA film grads, includes concert footage of Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam. Hype! will be shown in Willard Straight Theatre this Friday at midnight, Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10:35 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 10:20 p.m.
