Symposium honors Robert J. Smith

Robert J. Smith, left, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Anthropology and Asian Studies at Cornell, is joined by

Ari, Hebrew University. The Sept. 26-28 symposium was held to honor Smith, who has been in the forefront of
American studies of Japanese society and culture since World War II. Among many honors, the Order of the Rising Sun
was conferred on Smith by the government of Japan in 1994, in recognition of his contributions to the field of Japan studies.
