Latino Studies Program's Unity Dinner, Dance is Oct. 24

The fifth annual Unity Dinner and Dance, honoring Latino Heritage Month, will be held Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. on the seventh floor of Clark Hall.

Tickets for the event, which is open to the public, are $5 and can be purchased until Oct. 17 from the Latino Studies Program office in 434 Rockefeller Hall, 255-3197.

Sponsored by the Latino Studies Program, the event centers around the theme for Latino National Heritage Month -- "Excellence in Education: Building Opportunities for Our Youth."

"The Unity Dinner is the major event for Latino National Heritage Month," said Marti Bianco-Dense, administrative manager for the Latino Studies Program. "It is the first event of the year, which brings together over 200 students and faculty,"

The guest speaker for the Unity Dinner and Dance will be Carlos Castillo-Chavez, professor and chair of biometrics at Cornell. In addition to Castillo-Chavez, Mario Flores '98, Architecture, Art and Planning, also will give a talk on Latino National Heritage Month.

"[Mario] was chosen to speak because he is active on the Student Assembly and also in the Latino community," said Bianco-Dense.

Also speaking at the event will be Quisaira Yanet Almanzar '91, president of the Cornell Latino Alumni Association.

Throughout the evening, there will be performances by various Latino student organizations, including the Sabor Latino Dance Ensemble, Teatrotaller and Ballet Folklorico.
