Obituary

S. Gordon Campbell, professor of microbiology and immunology in the College of Veterinary Medicine and a leader in international veterinary education, died Sept. 29 at Cayuga Medical Center. He was 63. A memorial service is planned for the spring.

"He was an exceptional teacher and superb lecturer, always friendly and willing to give advice," said Roger J. Avery, chair of the department. "He was very well liked by students and colleagues alike. This will be a tremendous loss to the department, to the college and to the profession. "

Campbell joined the Cornell faculty in 1967, after earning veterinary degrees at Glasgow University (1956) and Toronto University (1959) and a Ph.D. in immunology at Cornell (1964). He was born in Oban, on the west coast of Scotland, raised in the central Perthshire town of Crieff and practiced veterinary medicine in Glasgow and Ballyclare, Ireland, before coming to Canada and to the United States.

He served for two years, beginning in 1964, as a senior lecturer at Australia's University of Melbourne, before returning to Ithaca where he established Hickory Ridge, a working farm in the Highland tradition.

In 1985, Campbell was named associate dean of the veterinary college. He also served as director of international education, participating in projects with the World Bank, U.S. Agency for International Development and the Land O' Lakes Foundation.

The family plans a memorial service on May 2, 1998, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Hickory Ridge, 234 Lower Creek Road, Ithaca. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Salvation Army or to the Tompkins County SPCA, of which Campbell was a former president. Donations of children's books also may be made in his memory to the Southworth Library in Dryden.
