All items for the Chronicle Calendar should be submitted (typewritten, double spaced) by campus mail, U.S. mail or in person to Chronicle Calendar, Cornell News Service, Surge 3, Judd Falls Road.

Notices should be sent to arrive 10 days prior to publication and should include the name and telephone number of a person who can be called if there are questions.

Notices should also include the subheading of the calendar in which the item should appear.


Chronicle schedule

Weekly publication of the Cornell Chronicle will resume Jan. 15. The deadline to submit items for the calendar of that issue is Jan. 5.

* Thesis/Dissertation: The thesis/dissertation submission deadline for a January 1998 degree is Jan. 9.
* Spring registration: Spring 1998 graduate student registration will be Thursday, Jan. 15, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in 125 Caldwell Hall. New students and those continuing students with "holds" must register in person at Caldwell Hall. Continuing students with no "holds" do not need to go to Caldwell Hall for registration. To determine if you have a "hold," check Just the Facts on Bear Access beginning Jan. 12.
* Course enrollment: Graduate School course enrollment is from Jan. 15 through Feb. 6. Forms are available in graduate field offices and Caldwell Hall. Return completed form in person by Fri., Feb. 6, to the Graduate School. Students who completed electronic online pre-course enrollment do not complete a course enrollment form. For course changes, submit a course Add and Drop form to the Graduate School. All students no longer taking courses must enroll for thesis or dissertation research.
* Fellowships: Applications for 1998-99 Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are available in the World Area Program Offices, located on the first floor of Uris Hall. These offices also will have information on the deadline for completed applications. Fellowships are available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
* Graduate Community Assistant: Graduate and Professional Student Housing will hold information sessions for those interested in a GCA position for 1998-99. This is a live-in position in one of the graduate resident buildings/complexes. Full-time graduate students are welcome. To apply, you must attend one of these sessions: Jan. 20, Big Red Barn (BRB), 7 p.m.; Jan. 25, Maplewood Community Center, 5:30 p.m.; Jan. 28, BRB, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 2, BRB, 5 p.m. (Note: This position requires approximately 10 to 20 hours per week and may not be combined with another assistantship; graduate students may work no more than 20 hours per week and receive full residence credit.) Sophomore forward/center Derek Kruse (Fremont, Neb.) was named to the all-tournament team at the Ameritas Classic at the University of Nebraska last weekend, as the Big Red dropped a pair of contests. Grambling State defeated Cornell 53-49 on Friday, Dec. 5, while UNC-Wilmington handed the Big Red a 65-49 loss in the consolation game on Saturday, Dec. 6.

The women's basketball team lost to Niagara last Wednesday, but earned two victories over the weekend to win its own Cornell Classic. In the Niagara game, senior forward Kim Ruck (Northport, N.Y.) scored her 1,000th career point, but the Red lost 70-63 to the Purple Eagles. The team rebounded quickly though, and defeated Robert Morris 68-67 in overtime on Friday and beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 64-46 on Saturday to win the Classic.

The women's fencing team dropped its season opener, losing 26-6 at Yale on Saturday, Dec. 6. On Sunday, the Big Red participated in the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Christmas Invitational at Fairleigh Dickinson.

It was a tough weekend in the Capitol District for the Big Red men skaters, as they dropped decisions to Union 4-2 on Friday night and 7-5 at Rensselaer on Saturday evening.
Cornell will open the Pepsi Tournament against defending NCAA champion North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux leads the series 2-1, including a 6-2 victory last year in the NCAA Western Regionals. The other game in the tournament pits Western Michigan against Ferris State. The Big Red holds a 1-0 lead over Western, with an 8-3 win in 1978-79. The series with Ferris is tied at 1-1, with the two teams splitting a pair of games at Lynah Rink last year. Cornell won the first one 4-3 and the Bulldogs took the second 6-4.
Women's Hockey (8-3, 7-1 ECAC)

The Big Red women skaters swept a pair of games from ECAC foe St. Lawrence last weekend, winning 5-1 Friday night and 8-0 Saturday at Lynah Rink.
Cornell will go on its European tour to face Finland, Sweden, and Norway beginning Dec. 27, before returning home to its ECAC schedule. Harvard leads the series with the Big Red 20-14-2, but Cornell took a pair of games from the Crimson last year, 6-2 in Cambridge and 5-2 at Lynah. Northeastern holds a commanding 22-6 advantage over Cornell, but the two teams split last year's contests. Cornell won in Boston 2-1, but the Huskies returned the favor, winning 4-2 at Lynah Rink.

The men's swimming team ran up its third straight victory and collected its second Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League win, beating Columbia 160-135.
Princeton is 44-4-1 against Cornell, including a 176-114 win last year.

The Big Red remained undefeated in the Ivy League as it defeated Columbia 153-147.

The men's indoor track team had an impressive beginning to its season, placing first or second in seven of 13 possible events in the Cornell Relays.
