Nimat Hafez Barazangi, a visiting fellow in the Women's Studies Program, will be the guest editor of the winter 1998 edition of the journal Religion and Education. This edition will address issues of Islamic education in the United States and deal with challenges facing families, youth and children of different ethnic backgrounds. Barazangi also is authoring a special article for the edition, titled "The Equilibrium of Islamic Education: Has Muslim Women's Education Preserved the Religion?"
Bruce Ganem, the Franz and Elisabeth Roessler Professor of Chemistry, is one of four newly elected members of the ArQule Inc. Scientific Advisory Board. In announcing the appointment of Ganem, along with professors at Yale, Northeastern and the University of Southern California, ArQule Executive Vice President Joseph C. Hogan Jr. said: "These four world renowned scientists will provide counsel to ArQule as the company continues to apply its proprietary technology to areas outside of drug discovery while simultaneously working to realize our vision of becoming the leading technology company in accelerated drug and chemical product discovery."
John O. McClain, professor of quantitative analysis at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, was elected vice president/president-elect of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Section of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences for 1997-98. He will serve as president in 1998-99.
Herbert J. Carlin, the J. Preston Levis Professor of Engineering Emeritus, delivered the 1997-98 keynote academic address at the newly founded Isik University in Istanbul, Turkey, Oct. 20. The program also included talks by the President of Turkey, Suleyman Demeril, and by the Rector of the University, Siddik Yarman, who holds a Cornell doctorate.
