Enrique Figueroa, associate professor of agricultural resources and managerial economics, was named by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 16 to serve as an alternate representative to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Advisory Committee for Commercial Dispute Resolution Regarding Agricultural Goods. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman explained that members and alternates on the committee will focus their attention on addressing disputes over perishable fruits and vegetables. He said the committee eventually will address disputes for other agricultural commodities. Figueroa is among 10 alternates on the committee, who come from agriculture, business and academia. The NAFTA agreement stipulates that eight of the alternate representatives on this section of the committee work outside of the government but must have an interest in agriculture. The first meeting of the NAFTA Advisory Committee is scheduled for Feb. 17 to 18 in Mazatlan, Mexico.
