The Cornell Alumni Federation's Nominations Committee presented slates of candidates for six director-at-large and eight director-from-the-region positions to the full federation board at its Jan. 24, 1997, meeting. Unanimously endorsed to begin terms in May 1997 as directors-at-large were Andreas D. Baxevanis '84, Herbert M. Fontecilla '66, ME '67, Donna L. Forsman '63, BFA '64, Sanford M. Gibbs '64, Ruthanne Kurtyka '70, JD '73, and Jennifer L. Herskowitz '88. Directors-at-large represent the alumni body as a whole and serve two-year terms.
Retiring directors-at-large, whose terms ended in April, are Cathy Bonczek '81 and Michael Gerling '76, MBA '77.
Approved by the board to serve two-year terms as directors-from-the-regions were: Deanne G. Gitner '66 (Metro-New York); Muriel B. Kuhs '61 (Midwest); Dorothy P. Valachovic '71 (New York/Ontario); Merle K. Mermelstein '82 (North Central); Christine M. Felton '90 (Northeast); Jon P. Vollmer, MBA '81 (Southeast); Kenneth A. Portnoy '70, B.ARCH '71 (Southwest/Mountain); and Alan T. Beimfohr '66 (Western). With this appointment, Deanne Gitner '66, Muriel Kuhs '61, and Dorothy Valachovic '71 begin their second terms on the federation board.
In all, there are 18 directors-from-the-regions, representing Cornell clubs and alumni associations from nine regions throughout the country; nine new directors are appointed each year.
Outgoing directors-from-the-region are Roger Carroll '76 (North Central); Janis McManus '76 (Northeast); Diana Calby '54 (Southeast); Edward Roach '80 (Southwest/Mountain); and Francis Dawson '72 (Western).
At its May 17 meeting, the federation board unanimously approved the slate of 1997-1999 officers presented by its nominations committee. Beginning their two-year terms as officers in May 1997 are Jeffrey S. Estabrook '80, JD '83 (president); Donna L. Forsman '63, BFA '64 (vice president); Jane Longley-Cook '69 (vice president); Gene D. Resnick '70, MD '74 (vice president); Martha Sherman '73, MPS '75 (vice president); and Sharon H. Williams '65 (vice president). Director of Alumni Affairs Mary F. Berens '74 continues as secretary/treasurer.
