Dean's appointment confirmed: The appointment of Donald F. Smith as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine was confirmed by the Cornell Board of Trustees at its meeting on campus May 24 and by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees on May 28. Smith's nomination to the post was announced by Provost Don M. Randel on April 16. He will assume his new post on July 1.

New SUNY vice chancellor:Donald G. Dunn has been appointed executive vice chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY), the highest business officer position within the system administration and one that combines duties formerly carried out by two vice chancellors. "This will result not only in budget savings to the University, but addresses the efficiency and effectiveness goals of Rethinking SUNY and our system restructuring," said SUNY Chancellor John W. Ryan. "Don Dunn is a highly experienced public servant who has had an extensive career in state and local government," said Henrik N. Dullea, Cornell vice president for university relations. "I've had the pleasure of working with him for several decades, and I look forward to continuing that positive relationship in the years ahead."

Changes in parking rate system:Changes in transportation options for Cornell faculty, staff and affiliates take effect July 1. The "Commuter Report" -- mailed the week of May 12 -- describes the new parking rate tier system and alternative commuter programs, such as OmniRide, RideShare and Occasional Parker, as well as no-fee parking options. In response to concerns voiced during the May 21 Employee Assembly meeting, current W, SA and R permit holders will see their rate step to Tier 3 over a two-year period, and the Hughes lot will continue to be P/SA parking. This is a change from the map and plan as described in the "Commuter Report." Transportation Services' staff will offer one-on-one consultations in the colleges and departments affected to help employees decide on the best program for their individual transportation needs. Letters and meeting notices were mailed this week to employees affected by these changes. For more information, call 255-PARK.

Tower Road detours:A portion of Tower Road -- from Judd Falls Road to Campus Road in the vicinity of Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) and the College of Veterinary Medicine -- is scheduled to be rebuilt beginning the week of June 9. While the road will be closed to through traffic until Aug. 20, emergency access will be maintained to all facilities on the east end of campus for the duration of the project. Parking lot access will be maintained by phasing work on sections of Tower Road. Modification of bus routes is being coordinated through TCAT and the Cornell transportation office, which will place detour signs in the area and send an advisory to employees who park in lots accessed from Tower Road. Bus stops at the Vet Research Tower and in front of BTI will be closed through Aug. 20, but a temporary stop will be established at the intersection of Campus and Tower roads for westbound buses. An eastbound stop already exists adjacent to Stocking Hall. For more information on the project, contact Robert Chiang, project manager, at 255-6613 or by e-mail at rhc3@cornell.edu.

Campus Road work:Motorists on campus should expect some delays when traveling on Campus Road between Stewart and Central Avenues due to road construction from June 9 to July 14. James Finnigan of the Department of Planning, Design and Construction said Campus Road will be milled and resurfaced during that time. The street is expected to be closed one lane at a time.

Barton Hall closure:The main floor of Barton Hall will be closed from June 9 to Oct. 15 for construction activities. The scope of the project includes the removal and disposal of asbestos-containing material that is attached to the underside of the ceiling deck. Contact Bob Lotkowictz at 255-4461 or rel2@cornell.edu for information.

Hydrant flushing:The annual flushing of campus fire hydrants will take place from June 9 to 27. Water may appear cloudy during this time but will be safe to drink, said Ann Christofferson, manager of the Water and Sewer Division, Department of Utilities.

Intramural softball: Competitive, coed and recreational leagues are now forming for summer softball season. Intramural softball is open to all Cornell staff, students and spouses/domestic partners receiving benefits. The season runs from June 16 to Aug. 7. Teams play two games a week for the seven-week season. A $50 entry fee and roster must be submitted to the Intramural Office in 305 Helen Newman Hall before June 11 at 5 p.m. Entry forms and information are available at the office or by calling 255-2315 or 255-5133. A managers' meeting will be held June 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Helen Newman lounge.
