All items for the Chronicle Calendar should be submitted (typewritten, double spaced) by campus mail, U.S. mail or in person to Chronicle Calendar, Cornell News Service, Village Green, 840 Hanshaw Road.

Notices should be sent to arrive 10 days prior to publication and should include the name and telephone number of a person who can be called if there are questions.

Notices should also include the subheading of the calendar in which the item should appear.

Cornell International Folk Dancers
The annual CIFD picnic is Sunday, July 13, beginning at 5 p.m. with a dish-to-pass dinner at the large pavilion at Stewart Park. All are welcome. Bring plates and utensils. Scandinavian dances will be taught July 20 at 7:30 p.m., followed by request dancing at 8:30 p.m., in the Vet College atrium. Welcome freshmen and their families
Emeritus faculty are needed to staff information outposts to provide guidance and a friendly welcome when entering freshmen and their families arrive on campus Friday, Aug. 22. Outposts are located at five major entry points surrounding the campus. Cornell Plantations
Cornell Plantations, the university's botanical garden, arboretum and natural areas, is open free of charge seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. Limited parking is available at the Lewis Headquarters Building at One Plantations Road. Telephone: 255-3020.
* The Robison York State Herb Garden is in its summer glory. See and smell more than 500 varieties of colorful herbs for cooking, medicine, household or industrial use or others valued for their spiritual and cultural associations. The garden is adjacent to Plantations' headquarters building.
* The Martha Howell Young Garden, adjacent to the Herb Garden, features plants popular for cutting, as well as sources of inspiration in decoration, art and architecture.

graduate bulletin

* July 18 closing: The Graduate School offices in Caldwell Hall will be closed Friday, July 18, at noon for a staff retreat.
* August degree deadline: Friday, Aug. 22, is the deadline for completing all requirements for an August degree, including submitting the thesis/dissertation to the Graduate School.
* Fall '97 registration: Registration is in the Field House, Monday, Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for new students and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for continuing students with "holds." All new students and continuing students with "holds" must register in person. Continuing students with no "holds" do not need to go to the Field House. Students should check "Just the Facts" after Aug. 18 to determine if they have a "hold."
Study abroad: Applications for Fulbright grants for study abroad for the 1998-99 academic year are available at the Einaudi Center for International Studies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants should meet with the Fulbright adviser, Milton Esman, starting Aug. 25. For an appointment, contact the Einaudi Center, 170 Uris Hall, phone 255-6370. Applications are due Oct. 1.
Travel: Conference travel grant applications are due at the Graduate Fellowships and Financial Aid Office, Caldwell Hall, by Aug. 1 for September conferences. Application forms are available at graduate field offices. Grants for transportation are awarded to registered graduate students invited to present papers.

Summer Sessions
Outdoor concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. on the Arts Quad; rain location is Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall:
* Samite of Uganda, acclaimed singer-songwriter, will play traditional African instruments July 11.
* Annie Burns, popular local vocalist, teams up with Texas swing musicians Valerie and James Denns for an evening of country-swing, boogie-woogie, blues and jazz July 18.
Classical concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre, Center for Theatre Arts:
* The Berg, Jones & Sarvis dance trio from Maine will perform July 15.
* On July 22, the Apollo Ensemble chamber orchestra will play Haydn's Symphony No. 13 in D Major.
Bound for Glory
On July 13, Jim Henry will make his "Bound for Glory" debut. On July 20, Paul Wilder will perform.
The show runs Sunday nights from 8 to 11, with live sets at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. in the Cafe at Anabel Taylor Hall.
All three sets are different. Admission is free and open to the public.
"Bound for Glory" is broadcast on WVBR-FM 93.5 and 101.5.

Confocal Microscopy
"Confocal Microscopy," a special seminar sponsored by the Cornell Biotechnology Resource Center, Flow Cytometry and Imaging Facility, will be held July 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in G-01 Biotechnology Building. Featured will be Mary Duseau, image analysis specialist from Bio-Rad Laboratories, who will give a two-part presentation.
