Barbara Krause is appointed JA for second term

The University Assembly has appointed Barbara L. Krause, a 1986 Cornell Law School graduate, to a second two-year term as the university's judicial administrator (JA).

The reappointment, made on the recommendation of President Hunter Rawlings, was effective July 1. As judicial administrator Krause receives, investigates and adjudicates complaints of violations of the Campus Code of Conduct.

"In her capacity as JA over the past two years, Barbara has demonstrated a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the position," said Michael Esposito, chair of the University Assembly. "She is both sympathetic and just and treats all situations that come to her attention with fairness and respect."

When she assumed the position of JA two years ago, Krause predicted her biggest challenge would be to enforce the Campus Code of Conduct in a way that would instill both confidence and respect in members of the campus community. She has achieved that goal, Esposito said.

"Members of the University Assembly and Barbara have forged a relationship marked by great confidence and mutual respect. We look forward to seeing that relationship flourish in the future," he added.

Krause said she is "very pleased" to serve another two years. "The Cornell community places a great deal of trust in our office, and I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve the university as the judicial administrator."

She also said she has enjoyed the good relationship between the JA's office and other segments of the campus community.

"Over the years, I think the JA's office has developed very positive working relationships with lots of different segments of the community -- for example, Campus Life, Gannett Health Center, the Public Service Center and the University Assembly," Krause said. "We need to continue working with those other groups to ensure that disciplinary sanctions serve an educational purpose and are not merely punitive."

When she was a law student at Cornell, Krause was editor in chief of the Cornell International Law Journal, served on the Committee on Career Planning and Placement and was a writing instructor in the Practice Training Course. After graduation, she held a U.S. District Court clerkship under the Hon. Edward T. Gignoux in Portland, Maine, then joined the law firm of Drummond, Woodsum & MacMahon in Portland in 1987.

She received her A.B. in philosophy and German in 1981 from Duke University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Krause is also an athlete who played semi-professional basketball in Dorsten, Germany, for two years after graduation from Duke, where she was captain of the women's varsity basketball team. While studying at Cornell, she often worked out with the women's basketball team and has since become an avid golfer.
