All items for the Chronicle Calendar should be submitted (typewritten, double spaced) by campus mail, U.S. mail or in person to Chronicle Calendar, Cornell News Service, Village Green, 840 Hanshaw Road.

Notices should be sent to arrive 10 days prior to publication and should include the name and telephone number of a person who can be called if there are questions.

Notices should also include the subheading of the calendar in which the item should appear.

Cornell International Folk Dancers
On July 27, Turkish dances will be taught; on Aug. 3 and 10, international folk dancing favorites will be taught. Teaching begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by open dancing from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Dancing is at the Vet College atrium. Welcome freshmen and their families
Emeritus faculty are needed to staff information outposts to provide guidance and a friendly welcome when entering freshmen and their families arrive on campus Friday, Aug. 22. Outposts are located at five major entry points surrounding the campus. Cornell Plantations
Cornell Plantations, the university's botanical garden, arboretum and natural areas, is open free of charge seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. Limited parking is available at the Lewis Headquarters Building at One Plantations Road. Telephone: 255-3020.
* The Robison York State Herb Garden is in its summer glory. See and smell more than 500 varieties of herbs for cooking, medicine, household or industrial use or others valued for their spiritual and cultural associations. The Herb Garden is adjacent to Plantations' headquarters building.
* The Martha Howell Young Garden, adjacent to the Herb Garden, features plants popular for cutting, as well as sources of inspiration in decoration, art and architecture.
Kroch Library
"I Take This Pen in Hand: Letters Home From Everyday People" is on display at the Carl A. Kroch Library through Sept. 30. The letters are drawn primarily from Cornell Library's regional history collection and span 160 years of American history. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

* August degree deadline: Friday, Aug. 22, is the deadline for completing all requirements for an August degree, including submitting the thesis/dissertation to the Graduate School.
* Fall '97 registration: Registration is in the Field House, Monday, Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for new students and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for continuing students with "holds." All new students and continuing students with "holds" must register in person. Continuing students with no "holds" do not need to go to the Field House. Students should check "Just the Facts" after Aug. 18 to determine if they have a "hold."
Study abroad: Applications for Fulbright grants for study abroad for the 1998-99 academic year are available at the Einaudi Center for International Studies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants should meet with the Fulbright adviser, Milton Esman, starting Aug. 25. For an appointment, contact the Einaudi Center, 170 Uris Hall, phone 255-6370. Completed applications are due Oct. 1.
* Thesis, dissertation templates: Templates for creating theses and dissertations are available on the Web at http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/grad/students/thesis/templates/citpubs.html.
* New student reception: Dean of the Graduate School Walter Cohen welcomes new students on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m., with a reception at the Big Red Barn Grad Center.
* Orientation: Graduate student orientation programs begin Saturday, Aug. 23, with an open house at the Big Red Barn from noon to 4 p.m., free refreshments; brochures in field offices, the Big Red Barn Grad Center and the Graduate School in Caldwell Hall.
* Fellowship: A partial tuition fellowship for self-supporting doctoral students is being offered. Since reduced tuition has ended, doctoral students who are self supporting are eligible for partial tuition fellowships if they entered the doctoral program in spring 1995 or earlier, have six semesters registered in the Graduate School and have passed the A-Exam. Completed applications are due at the Graduate Fellowship Office, 155 Caldwell Hall, by Aug. 29 for the fall semester.
* English test: The English Placement Test will be held in Room D, Goldwin Smith Hall, Monday, Aug. 25, 9:30 a.m. Entering international students who satisfied the language requirement with a TOEFL score below 600 must take this examination.

* The Sheryl Skye Band performs contemporary folk-rock Aug. 1.
* The New Nile Orchestra plays world beat and Eastern African rhythms Aug. 8.
Classical concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre, Center for Theatre Arts:

Bound for Glory
On July 27, Annie Hills will perform; on Aug. 3, Michael Johnathon. The show runs Sunday nights from 8 to 11, with live sets at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. in the Cafe at Anabel Taylor Hall. All three sets are different. Admission is free and open to the public. Bound for Glory is broadcast on WVBR-FM 93.5 and 101.5. In much of August, Bound for Glory will present albums from the studio. Alcoholics Anonymous

Cornell Outdoor Education
Cornell Outdoor Education will offer an open house paddling day Aug. 10 from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Beebe Lake. The event is free and open to Cornell faculty, staff and the Ithaca community. There will be 14 flat-water canoes, five white-water canoes, 12 white-water kayaks and four sea kayaks available. Several paddling instructors will be on hand to give beginner instruction.
