Music to his ears

Roald Hoffmann, the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and professor of chemistry, was honored with an on-campus symposium for his 60th birthday on July 19 and 20. The program included lectures, readings and musical offerings by colleagues in academia and the arts.

Above, in Barnes Hall Auditorium on July 19, Charlotte Greenspan, who performed on piano and harpsichord, announces a piece to be played by her and, from left, Jerrold Meinwald on flute, Steven Ewer on viola and Graeme Bailey on violoncello.

At left, Hoffmann, center, listens in the audience with Archie Ammons, left, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Poetry -- who earlier gave a poetry reading -- and James Arthur Ibers, professor of chemistry at Northwestern University.
