Chamber of Commerce address: Economic development continues to be a priority at the city and county government levels. What is the role of higher education on that forefront? On Tuesday, Aug. 26, Cornell President Hunter Rawlings will address members of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and describe economic-development and technology-transfer programs at the university and how they benefit the county and the region. Topics include the recent establishment of Cornell's Office of Economic Development, the appointment of the first president of the new Business Innovation Center and the strengthening of several related university programs. Also to be outlined are cooperative efforts with Tompkins County Area Development, the Chamber of Commerce and local governments. Rawlings' talk, part of the chamber's Business Information Network series, is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. at the Ramada Inn-Airport on North Triphammer Road. Reservations can be made by calling 273-7080.
Transportation services hours: The transportation office will remain open with reduced staff from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22, 25 and 26 to accommodate faculty and staff members. All undergraduate, graduate and professional students who need to pick up or purchase a permit or pass should come to the Field House Multipurpose Room on their preappointed days. Beginning Aug. 27, the transportation office will resume its academic year hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Part-time study for employees: With department approval, regular full-time and part-time non-academic Cornell employees may enroll in on-campus courses through the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions. Tuition will be waived for up to four credits. The 1997 fall term classes begin Aug. 28. Employees may register by mail by submitting the extramural study application form available from the Continuing Education office in B20 Day Hall or from the Benefit Services office in 130 Day Hall. The course instructor and the employee's supervisor and department head must sign the form; some colleges have additional requirements for registering in their courses. The deadline for employees to register by mail is Sept. 19. Grantsmanship training offered: The Cornell Local Government Program is offering a Grantsmanship Training program from Oct. 27 to 31 in Warren Hall. The grantsmanship training will be conducted by the Grantsmanship Center, an internationally respected leader in training for nonprofit organizations. Designed for both the novice and experienced grant-seeker, this hands-on workshop covers all aspects of researching, writing proposals and negotiating with funding sources, including foundation, corporations and government agencies. Participants will learn the center's proposal writing format the most widely used format in the world with over 850,000 copies in print. Participants will search out funding for their organization using a wealth of on-site materials and work in teams to develop an actual proposal. Proposal review and critique is a support service offered to all training program participants. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants.
