'Magic' speaks at Bailey Hall on Feb. 12

Earvin "Magic" Johnson, former NBA basketball star and now an HIV and AIDS awareness activist, will talk on campus next month.

Johnson will speak Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Tickets for his appearance, sponsored by the Cornell University Program Board, went on sale for students Wednesday, for $7; remaining tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, for $10, at the Willard Straight Hall ticket office.

In 1991, Johnson, who had been one of the NBA's brightest stars during his 11 year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, announced that he was HIV positive.

In addition to being involved in various successful business ventures since leaving basketball, Johnson set up the Magic Johnson Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to AIDS awareness, and has become a highly visible spokesperson for HIV and AIDS research and understanding.
