Thomas D. Seeley, professor of neurobiology and behavior and author of Wisdom of the Hive (Harvard University Press, 1996), has been awarded the gold medal of APIMONDIA, the international association of national beekeeping organizations, for the German-language edition of the book Im Mikrokosmos des Bienenstocks (Birkhauser Verlag, 1997). APIMONDIA, which represents 55 organizations with 5 million members, cited Seeley for his presentation of new information on bee behavior and colony organization.
Heather Haveman, associate professor of organizational behavior at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, has won the 1997 Max Weber Award from the American Sociological Association for the best paper in three years in the fields of organizations, occupations and work. The paper, "The Ecological Dynamics of Careers: The Impact of Organizational Founding, Dissolution and Merger on Job Mobility," was written with Lisa Cohen and published in July 1994 in the American Journal of Sociology.
Patricia A. Searles, deputy director of Academic Technology Services, has received the 1997 Bill D. Morris Award from the Association of College and University Telecommunications Administrators (ACUTA). The award honors Searles' outstanding commitment and service to the association and the profession, said ACUTA President Jim Cross. An international nonprofit educational association, ACUTA serves nearly 800 colleges and universities and 120 corporate affiliates.
Michael G. Villani received the Recognition Award in Urban Entomology from the Entomological Society of America (ESA) at its national meeting in December in Nashville, Tenn. Villani is associate professor of soil insect ecology in Cornell's entomology department at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. The Recognition Award is one of several awards provided annually by the ESA to recognize and encourage outstanding scientists who have distinguished themselves by significant contributions in urban entomology. This is the second time Villani was recognized by the ESA. In 1996, the Eastern Branch of the ESA honored him with the Distinguished Achievement Award in Urban Entomology.
