CCA grant winners to exhibit their artwork in Tjaden Gallery

A detail from "Tre Pesci" (1997), a Roman fresco by Aulia Tisch, will be featured in an exhibition of works by Cornell Council for the Arts grant winners, opening Feb. 2 in the Olive Tjaden Gallery. Tisch is ticket manager for the Cornell Concert Series.

Five recipients of Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) grants will present their artwork on campus this month in a series of exhibitions in the newly opened Olive Tjaden Gallery of Tjaden Hall.

"The five artists showing their work demonstrate the remarkable artistic talent and diversity represented among grant recipients," said Anna Geske, coordinator of the Cornell Council for the Arts.

From Feb. 2 to 6, the gallery will showcase senior Nilda Taveras's drawings of people and landscapes of the Dominican Republic. On display from Feb. 16 to 21 will be senior Enikö Hangay's photographs of her native Budapest and senior Sandra Lee's book of intaglio prints with written poetry and narrative.

"Books and Bricks," on exhibit Feb. 28 to March 6, will feature the work of Cornell staff members Aulia Tisch, ticket manager for the Cornell Concert series, and Samantha Couture, conservator in Olin Library. Tisch will present a series of frescoes of representational and abstract images prepared in the traditional style of fresco painting, but also employing techniques of buon fresco, graffito and stucco lucido. Couture will present two books with a series of intaglio prints of dance images.

"The Cornell Council for the Arts grant helped me tremendously in my work," Tisch said.

Last fall, the CCA awarded more than $11,000 to 26 Cornell students and staff members to support a variety of art projects, including fashion design and photography.

Grants are awarded in the May preceding the academic year in which the completed work is presented. The council office has information on application for project proposals, which are due May 1.

In addition to being exhibited at the Olive Tjaden Gallery, works are eligible for inclusion in a juried exhibition to be held at the Johnson Museum in 2000.
