The local program is a joint project of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and Tompkins Cortland Community College. Phillip McPheron, director of graduate and professional student housing, and Barbara Romano, manager of conference services, were selected from a field of campus applicants. They will begin the eight-month program in October, including a series of seminars, retreats, training workshops and group problem-solving projects to enhance the leadership potential of participants. Topics range from law and justice, education, local government and economic development to human services, quality of life and more, with presentations from a cross-section of local decision-makers. This past year, Leadership Tompkins project teams addressed ways to promote tourism, link business and learning opportunities, and improve the downtown Ithaca retail community. Since the local program began in the late 1980s, about two dozen Cornell employees have taken part in Leadership Tompkins.
