A tape measure stretched the length of East Avenue on campus is part of a lab exercise for Geological Sciences 101, as students in the introductory-level class try to gauge the circumference of planet Earth. They used handheld GPS (global positioning satellite) monitors to determine latitude along a north-south longitudinal line, the street itself. Working out the problem earlier this month were, from left, Heather McCone, graduate teaching assistant, freshman Albert Pulido, junior Jess Tabolt and freshman Matt Recker. For the record, the Earth is about 25,000 miles around and East Avenue, about 2,000 feet long. Photo by John Chiment, Department of Geological Sciences
