Cornell alumnus and athletic nutrition expert Dan Benardot '80, Ph.D., will give an open campus lecture titled "Power Nutrition," Monday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. in Kennedy Alumni Auditorium, discussing the effect food has on athletic performance.
The program is designed to help elite athletes, "weekend warriors" or even non-athletes improve their energy level through healthy nutrition.
Benardot is an associate professor of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University and graduate program director of nutrition and laboratory technologies.
In l992, he co-founded the Laboratory for Elite Athlete Performance and has been involved in the study of elite athletes since that time. He was team nutritionist for the l996 gold medal USA Gymnastics Team and chair of the Athlete Wellness Program Advisory Board for USA Gymnastics since l995.
He was the first American appointed to serve on the medical commission for Federation Internationale de Gymnastique -- the international governing body for gymnastics. And currently he conducts research for the United States Olympic Committee on nutritional factors associated with bone density changes in elite gymnasts.
Over the years, Benardot has authored articles and books in the area of sports nutrition, and he is a frequent speaker on this topic at national and international conferences.
In addition to the evening program, Benardot will give presentations to staff in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics and University Health Services; and he will be a guest speaker for the Division of Nutritional Sciences' field seminar.
