Mexican author reads from her work on Friday

Students of Romance languages in general and literary aficionados fluent in Spanish particularly are encouraged to attend Mexican author Aline Pettersson's reading Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. in 277 Goldwin Smith Hall.

Pettersson, whose visit is sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies, the Latin American Studies Program and the Cornell Council for the Arts, will read in Spanish from her latest works. A reception will follow.

Pettersson was awarded this year's International Gabriela Mistral prize for her work. (Mistral was the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in literature, in 1945.) Pettersson has published nine novels, poetry, short stories and stories for children and is the recipient of numerous national and international grants and prizes and a winner of many juried competitions in Mexico. Her work has been translated into English and German. She is fluent in English and will welcome questions from the audience after her reading.

Among the literary prizes Pettersson has received in Mexico include: the Jose Ruben Romero award for novel writing in 1987; the Casa de las Americas (Cuento Femenino) for short story writing in 1990; the Revista Plural in 1989, for short story writing, and a third short story award from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico in 1988. She also is a frequent contributor to the Mexican press.
