Distance learning expo and Ivy-Plus consortium scheduled for next week

Cornell faculty are invited to a hands-on demonstration of the university's new distance learning classrooms at an open house and exposition sponsored by the Office of Distance Learning, Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rooms are equipped with video cameras and projectors to enable students and teachers to share their classroom experience with those in classrooms at other institutions.

Called "Tools for Distance Learning," the expo also features several vendors of distance learning systems and technologies, who will display their products starting at 10 a.m. in Room 105 of in the ILR Conference Center on Garden Avenue. There also will be an opportunity to interact with several vendors, at a distance, via videoconferencing in the new classrooms.

The expo is sandwiched between two other distance-learning events: a course on distance learning for university administrators around the country, sponsored by the School of Continuing Education and Summer Session, and a meeting of the Ivy-Plus Distance Learning Consortium, which starts immediately following the expo and runs into Wednesday afternoon. The course is sold out, but the Ivy-Plus meeting still has a few seats available.

The Ivy-Plus conference brings together staff and faculty involved in existing or upcoming distance-learning activities at Ivy League schools, plus Stanford University and MIT, for in-depth discussions of issues that include course content, marketing, intellectual-property ownership, faculty compensation, distance collaboration and financing. Cornell faculty and staff who are involved in distance learning, or wish to be, are welcome to attend the conference, provided they are willing to commit to attend the entire event, which runs from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 2 p.m. Wednesday. There is no charge for attending the conference, but reservations are required: Call Joan Lewis at 255-2055 for details.

More information on both the Ivy-Plus meeting and the expo are available on the web at http://www.dl.cornell.edu/odl98/about.office/ivyplus98.stm.
