George P. Hess, professor of biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, has been selected to participate in the Wellcome Visiting Professorship in the Basic Medical Sciences for the 1998-99 academic year. The professorship is administered by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and sponsored by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The purpose of the program is to stimulate interest in the basic medical sciences and to encourage careers in this field. Hess is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a noted biophysical chemist who has developed very rapid kinetic techniques to study the chemical reactions that regulate the transmission of signals in the nervous system. As part of the program, he will deliver the Wellcome Lecture at the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine, Puerto Rico, next April.
