'Intermedia' is topic of lecture at Center for Theatre Arts Nov. 10

Yvonne Spielmann, assistant professor of media studies at the University of Siegen in Germany, has lectured throughout Europe and has organized three international conferences on the topic of arts and the media. On Nov. 10 she will give her first lecture at Cornell on "The Concept of Intermedia."

"Intermedia is one of the terms used to name processes in which there is an interrelationship, a dialogue perhaps, between two elements of different artistic and technological media," said Don Fredericksen, Cornell associate professor of theater arts and Spielmann's faculty host during her visit. "Other [names] include multimedia, hypertext, hybrid media and mixed media."

At 4:30 p.m. in the Film Forum in the Center for Theatre Arts, Spielmann will discuss the interaction and intersection of art and technology that is characteristic of the booming field. And she will answer questions at length during a post-seminar.

Spielmann has been helping to define the terms of the developing art form in articles and in her book published last year, Inter-media: The Systems of Peter Greenaway.

Her presentation is sponsored by the Office of the Committee on University Lectures.
