Theater buffs can study Broadway musicals over winter break in NYC

Cornell invites anyone interested in theater to participate in a new Winter Session program exploring the history of "The American Musical on Broadway." The first week of this three-week course will be held from Jan. 4-8, 1999, in New York City. The program continues from Jan. 11-22 via distance learning, allowing students to study online, from home or elsewhere.

During the first week of "The American Musical on Broadway," students will attend Broadway performances of the acclaimed musicals Ragtime and Cabaret, view their film versions and explore the musicals' literary sources. The second two weeks will consist of assigned readings, papers and daily e-mail sessions with program faculty. The program, which is sponsored by the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, is ideal for English, theater, film and dance majors or anyone interested in the history of American musical theater.

"The American Musical on Broadway" will be taught by Scott McMillin, professor of dramatic literature at Cornell and winner of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award.

The course has no pre-requisites, and it may be taken for three or four credits. The four-credit version, which includes a term paper, counts toward the theater arts or the English major.

Students must register by Dec. 18 at the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions office, B20 Day Hall.

For information, contact the office at 255-7259; fax 255-9697; e-mail cusp@cornell.edu; or visit the web site www.continuingeducation.cornell.edu/SP/html/amob.html.
