Steve Reich and recent grad to receive arts awards

Noted composer and Cornell alumnus Steve Reich and recent theatre arts graduate Maria Dizzia will receive university awards recognizing excellence in the arts during a private dinner and reception Friday, Feb. 13, in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.

Reich will receive the Cornell Alumni Award for Distinction in the Arts, and Dizzia will be given the Student Arts Award. They are the first recipients of the awards, announced in the fall, which were established last year by the Cornell Council and the Cornell Council for the Arts.

A 1957 Cornell graduate, Reich is one of America's foremost contemporary composers, writing and recording music for more than three decades. This past July, Nonesuch records released a 10-CD set of his music, simply titled Works 1965-1995. Reich will be giving a Composer's Forum on campus Friday afternoon, and there will be a concert of his music Saturday night. (See story).

Dizzia, who graduated from Cornell in December, appeared in eight Department of Theatre Arts productions during her student career, including The House of Blue Leaves, Angels in America and Measure for Measure, demonstrating a broad range of acting ability, playing both comedic and serious roles, said her teachers and directors.

The awards program will feature remarks from President Emeritus Dale Corson; David Bathrick, professor and chair of the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance; Percy Browning of the Cornell Council and its Cultural Endeavors Committee; and Steven Stucky, professor of music.
