Annual Engineering Day activities are set for this Saturday at Pyramid Mall

The Sciencenter in Ithaca is presenting the sixth annual Engineering Day at the Mall Saturday, Feb. 21, in conjunction with the Cornell College of Engineering.

The event, co-sponsored by Borg-Warner Automotive Inc. and Emerson Power Transmission Corp., will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Pyramid Mall on North Triphammer Road. It offers the community an opportunity to learn how engineers work and to what engineering is applied.

The Society of Women Engineers at Cornell is sponsoring a bridge-building extravaganza in which kids aspiring to be engineers can build toothpick bridges that will be tested for strength. There will be other activities for younger visitors, including games with Tinker Toys.

"Kids of all ages can come and learn about technology and what engineers do," said Deborah Levin, Engineering Day coordinator and Sciencenter co-founder and volunteer. "There will be hands-on activities similar to what we have at the Sciencenter," she said.

Older visitors can expect to enjoy some of the yearly favorites, including exhibits about lasers, fiber optics and a superconductor. A hybrid electric car also will be on display.

Levin said the involvement of local businesses, like Borg-Warner, Emerson and Odyssey Research Associates Inc., provides a good opportunity for visitors to see what many of them do.

"These companies don't necessarily sell their products to the public, but they do affect what we use everyday," she said.

The Sciencenter, at 601 First St., is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 272-0600.
