Distance learning forum: "Technology for 21st Century Teaching," offered by Cornell's Office of Distance Learning, will be held Friday, April 3, beginning at 8 a.m. in 105 ILR Conference Center, Garden Avenue. There is no registration fee. The session is designed to familiarize the entire community with state-of-the-art technologies currently available for enhancing education at a distance. There will be six simultaneous demonstrations at various locations within the building. The event also features a continental breakfast and a brief overview of the technologies being demonstrated. There will be four consecutive sessions, and most of the presentations will be repeated at each of the four sessions, allowing time for one-on-one questioning of the presenters between sessions. The Office of Distance Learning invites all those interested in distance learning to attend this event. For more information, call the office at 255-5378.
Goethe Prize 1998: Submissions for the 1998 Goethe Prize, open to all students, are now being sought. Junior, senior or graduate students can win up to $250 with an essay (10 to 20 pages) and freshmen and sophomores can win up to $100 with an essay (five to 10 pages) on any topic connected with German. The Goethe Prize, endowed in 1935 by Ludwig Vogelstein, is awarded annually for the best essay. The committee may award a first prize and, possibly, a second prize in each competition. Essays should be submitted under an assumed name, but the author must indicate class (freshman, sophomore, etc.) on the essay and submit a sealed envelope containing his/her identity. Each student may enter only one essay; former prize winners are not eligible, except that winners in the freshman-sophomore competition may enter the junior-graduate competition when they have advanced to that status. The deadline is noon, April 15. Submit entries to the Dean of the University Faculty, 315 Day Hall. For more information, contact Bonnie Buettner, 183 Goldwin Smith Hall, 255-5265, 255-4047 or bcg3@cornell.edu.
