David B. Lipsky receives ILR's Groat Award

David B. Lipsky, professor and director of the Cornell Office of Distance Learning and former dean of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, received the 1998 Judge William B. Groat Award April 18 at a reception and dinner in the Richard Ramin Room of the Field House.

The Groat Award, named for the New York Supreme Court justice who played a key role in the founding of the ILR School and in drafting its charter, is presented annually to an ILR graduate who has demonstrated exceptional professional accomplishment in the field of industrial and labor relations and outstanding service to the school.

In addition to his current responsibilities, Lipsky serves as director of the Cornell/PERC Institute on Conflict Resolution. Created in 1996, the institute conducts research on issues related to conflict resolution, develops educational programs for various institutions interested in implementing conflict resolution programs and designs courses on conflict resolution offered by the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

Lipsky joined the ILR School in 1969 and was named a full professor in 1979. He was named dean in 1988 and served until 1997. As dean, Lipsky strengthened the school's dedication to providing quality education and service to students and other constituents of the school. He also oversaw initial planning for the new ILR School facility and headed the school's successful capital campaign.

Lipsky earned a bachelor's degree from the ILR School in 1961 and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967.
